Line-up for Newcastle-under-Lyme’s first ArtSlam Revealed
A high energy celebration of creativity featuring the best local potters, painters and poets is heading to Newcastle-under-Lyme. ArtSlam NUL is a charity art event taking over the raw, industrial surroundings of Astley Place, formerly York Place Shopping Centre on Friday 27th June from 7pm.
This dynamic evening invites audiences to witness live competitive rounds of 2D visual art, ceramics, and spoken word, where artists go head-to-head to create original work in just 40 minutes. The audience will vote to crown the winner of each category, culminating in one overall ArtSlam Champion.
The competition will spotlight some of the area’s most exciting talent:
2D Art: Amalia Gherman, Chloe Breeze, Christian Bartram, Diana Abankhwa, James Fox Neville and Paige Sutton
Ceramics Round (sponsored by Valentine Clays): Docile, Kim Hargreaves and Olivia Azzopardi
Spoken Word Round (sponsored by ArtsKeele): Emily Galvin Wilson, Luke Edwards and Lisa Blower
ArtSlam NUL is being delivered in partnership by Appetite, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID and ArtsKeele, with support from Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, and in collaboration with Capital&Centric. The event builds on the huge success of Capital&Centric’s debut ArtSlam at Goods Yard in 2021.
Adding to the night’s electric atmosphere, audiences can expect a performance by Stoke-on-Trent’s Poet Laureate Nick Degg, drag bingo with Roada Hawse and DJ sets from Ben McManus. Half of all ticket sales will be donated to North Staffs Mind, a local mental health charity.
Offering the perfect gritty backdrop to the event, Astley Place is being transformed by Capital&Centric into a new community of 42 new homes, 11,150 sq ft of commercial space reserved for independents and a new music venue. This is one of the social impact developer’s four projects in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which includes Carpark, the UK’s first multistorey car park set to be repurposed into 111 new homes; Rye Park, a new build mixed used scheme with a new urban park; and former nightclub Zanzibar, delivering affordable home in partnership with Aspire Housing.
Rachel Adams, Appetite Director, said:
“ArtSlam promises to deliver a host of brilliant artists producing original work in front of your eyes. . With a live DJ, a sprinkling of surprises and party vibes, this is an event not to be missed. And with 50% of ticket sales going to North Staffs Mind, you can have a good time for a good cause.”
Charlotte Pearce, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID Manager, added:
“Helping to deliver events like ArtSlam reflects the positive changes happening across the town, like this transformative project from Capital&Centric. Supporting North Staffs Mind adds an important layer, celebrating creativity while also shining a light on mental health and community wellbeing.”
Tom Wilmot, Managing Director at Capital&Centric, said:
“Our first ArtSlam at Goods Yard was a total knockout, so we couldn’t resist bringing it to Newcastle-under-Lyme. It’s all about celebrating local talent and showing the role culture plays in breathing life back into town centres. Before a single brick is laid, we’re filling Astley Place with energy, creativity and community. We can’t wait to see what the artists come up with and give locals a taste of what’s to come.”
