Conservation specialist Capital&Centric reveals restoration proposals for Buxton

As part of the £130 million restoration and redevelopment of The Springs in Buxton town centre, social impact developer and conservation specialist, Capital&Centric has revealed how one of the buildings will look once it has been brought back to life from dereliction.

Winster Place is set for a revival. Taking pride of place on Spring Gardens, the Grade II-listed building has been part of the town’s story for over 170 years. Built c.1850 as ‘The Royal Hotel’ for the 6th Duke of Devonshire, it was designed to impress – all curved stone, grand windows and standout detailing. A real statement piece from Buxton’s spa-town heyday. But years of change have left it underused and losing its spark.

Now, Capital&Centric is stepping in to flip that - restoring the character, keeping those original features and reworking the building for modern life, so it becomes somewhere people want to spend time in again. Ground floor café bars, restaurants and shops will complement the existing offering in the town and 12 character filled apartments will be carefully converted to celebrate the building’s original features and heritage.

It’s classic example of Capital&Centric bringing heritage back to life. And it’s just one piece of Buxton’s next chapter - with plans for a bold new arrival into town, better connections, hidden car parking, cycle links, more public open space, public toilets and a mix of new homes.
