Drone footage reveals first glimpse of Greater Manchester’s tallest roof garden (outside the city centre)
New drone footage and photographs have captured the jaw-dropping rooftop views of Weir Mill, the £60m transformation of a historic mill being delivered by social impact developer Capital&Centric in the heart of Stockport.
Soaring above the town and perched high across the emerging neighbourhood, the roof garden at Weir Mill is now one the tallest of its kind outside Manchester city centre, giving residents a one-of-a-kind spot to relax and take in panoramic views of the Mersey and Stockport skyline.
To mark the milestone, Capital&Centric has released new photographs, showing the rooftop garden in progress - an elevated retreat with greenery, seating and wraparound views, designed to be a peaceful escape above the hustle and bustle.
Designed to bring people together, the rooftop garden is kitted out with an outdoor kitchen, which future residents can book for alfresco dining. The lawn has loads of space to kick back and catch rays in, and is set to be scene for future rooftop yoga classes.
Set against the backdrop of the development’s 14-storey landmark building, which marks a new addition to Stockport’s skyline, the rooftop garden is already turning heads. Rail passengers can catch a glimpse of the lush, green gardens rising above the town centre as they pass by atop the iconic viaduct.
The restored mill buildings - once part of Stockport’s proud industrial past - are now well on their way to becoming a buzzing new neighbourhood, with the rooftop garden just one of many lush, green spaces across Weir Mill, with plant-packed public squares, canalside hangouts and open air space for pop-ups and parties. Public squares, gardens and riverside terraces, providing bags of space for alfresco eats, events, pop-ups and places to chill
A line up of independent cafés, bars and eateries
Resident amenity that includes: rooftop garden, gym, co-working space, private dining & mini cini
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said:
“Weir Mill is a proper passion project - breathing new life into beautiful old buildings and creating something unique for Stockport. The rooftop garden is going to be one of the best spots in town to hang out. You’re up above the noise, with a peaceful space and incredible views. The new photos show it’s really starting to come to life.”
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“Weir Mill is a flagship scheme within the UK's largest town centre regeneration and shows why Stockport is being recognised nationally as a place that delivers.
"We’re breathing new life into a site that’s stood here for centuries, creating homes, green space and independent businesses that will help shape the next chapter of our town centre.
"As we look to expand the MDC boundary, Weir Mill sets the tone: bold design, big ambition, strong partnerships, and delivery that shows what the MDC and Town Centre West are all about, creating places that people want to live, work and spend time.”
