Newcastle multi-storey to get a new lease of life as contractor signs on

Capital&Centric are making moves on their boldest Newcastle-under-Lyme project yet, transforming a 1960s car park into 111 design-led homes, marking the first time multi-storey is being repurposed into homes.

The social impact developer has entered into a Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) with Clegg Construction for Karparc, marking a major step forward the pioneering project. With work set to start this autumn, the team will now be working through the nuts and bolts to get everything ready for spades hitting the ground.

In a UK first, the car park conversion will see the brutalist frame reimagined as a new community of one- and two-bedroom apartments. Underneath a striking three-storey atrium, residents will enjoy lush greenery and social spaces including a gym, lounge, mini cini and social hub.

The imaginative reuse of this existing structure offers an innovative solution to the UK’s housing shortage, bringing new homes forward quickly, sustainably, and without the carbon footprint of demolition and rebuild.

John Moffat, Joint Managing Director at Capital&Centric, said:

“This isn’t your average regeneration. We’re flipping expectations of what’s possible in our towns. Signing with Clegg Construction means Karparc is one big step closer, bringing new homes, green spaces and energy to a spot that’s long been overlooked. We can’t wait to get going this autumn.”

Simon Tagg, Council Leader at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said:

“It’s great news that this pioneering scheme, one of three being delivered for the council by Capital & Centric to reimagine Newcastle town centre, has reached an exciting new phase. We’re really looking forward to seeing this visionary project – the first of its type in the country – come to life which will attract new people into the area who will in turn support our local businesses.”

Watch this space as we head towards site starts later this year, and keep an eye out for more on what’s to come at the Karparc site by following Capital&Centric on Instagram.
