Prologue lands at Weir Mill - A new chapter for Stockport's cultural scene

April 23, 2026

The team behind Bramhall’s award-winning independent bookshop Simply Books is bringing its next chapter to Stockport town centre with Prologue set to open at Capital&Centric’s Weir Mill.

Located in the new building on site, Prologue goes beyond a typical bookshop, doubling up as a community hangout where readers, writers and creatives can come together.

Set to open in the Summer, Prologue is the latest addition to the Weir Mill line up, signifying a landmark moment for the family business whose thoughtful curation and community-led approach has made them a go-to destination for book lovers across Greater Manchester – and a regular stop for some of the biggest authors around.

With fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles, the space is designed to bring people together. Prologue will offer everything from immersive literary events and book clubs to comedy nights, live music, language classes and writing workshops. There is also a built-in coffee shop and bar, serving up pastries and coffees for the morning commute, before shifting into wines and cocktails as the day winds down.

Ben Johns, co-founder of Simply Books and Prologue, said:

“We’ve always believed that bookshops are a place of connection. With Prologue, we wanted to create something special for Stockport – somewhere everyone can feel right at home. We can’t wait to get to know a whole new community of readers.”

Richard Spackman Development Director at Capital&Centric said :

“Prologue is the kind of operator we want at Weir Mill, something that goes beyond its core offer to create a space people genuinely want to spend time in. It’s about more than the books; it’s the events, the flexible use of space and the day-to-evening offer that will bring a different kind of energy to the neighbourhood.”

Lord Gavin Barwell, Chair of Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), said:

“This imaginative and experience-led bookshop is a brilliant addition to the growing neighbourhood at Weir Mill. As a Stockport grown business that has gone from strength to strength, attracting both authors and visitors from across the UK, it’s fantastic to see them opening another site here. It will create a space not just for enjoying books but for slowing down, connecting with others, and taking part in events, all within a really special waterside setting. This is exactly what regeneration should deliver: new jobs, strong independents and more reasons for people to spend time in the town centre, while keeping the character that makes Stockport what it is. Investment of this quality shows the direction we’re heading and the momentum we’re building, ensuring Stockport remains a vibrant, welcoming and thriving place for residents, visitors and businesses alike.”

Located by the River Mersey and iconic viaduct, the Weir Mill neighbourhood brings together 253 homes across Grade II listed cotton mills and striking industrial-style new builds, all woven around lush green spaces and new public squares.

All the homes will be for rent and managed by Ollo, Capital&Centric’s lifestyle rental brand, recently crowned BTR Operator of the Year at the Property Week RESI Awards 2025. Due to launch over the coming weeks, those interested in making Weir Mill their home can register on the Ollo or C&C website.

With a growing line-up of indie food and drink spots, Weir Mill is shaping up to be the go to destination – blending heritage, homes and hangouts into one buzzing riverside community.
