Buxton reboot bags top architecture award
Capital&Centric’s plans to transform Buxton town centre have picked up a major design industry nod, with the £130m regeneration winning the Commercial Unbuilt Award at this year’s Manchester Society of Architects (MSA) Awards.
The award recognises Capital&Centric’s design vision for Revitalising Buxton, created in collaboration with architects Stephenson Hamilton Risley Studio and shaped through extensive consultation with people across the town.
The judges awarded the scheme the top prize in the Commercial Unbuilt category, recognising its ambitious approach to reshaping the heart of Buxton before construction has even begun.
The plans will transform the former Springs shopping centre into a thriving new neighbourhood, bringing new homes, independent shops, cafés and bars, green public spaces and better connections across the town centre.
The designs have evolved significantly through public consultation, with feedback from hundreds of local people helping to influence everything from the look and feel of the buildings to the public spaces, landscaping and how the new neighbourhood connects with the wider town.

To then have those designs judged by a peer group made up of some of the best architects and designers in the country, and come away with the top award, feels like a pretty powerfulendorsement of what everyone has helped create. We’ve always said that Buxton deserves something special. It’s an extraordinary town with incredible architecture and heritage, so the bar should be high. This gives us even more confidence that we’re heading in the right direction.”
The award follows continued progress on the project, with detailed plans for the regeneration moving forward as Capital&Centric works alongside High Peak Borough Council to deliver a new chapter for Buxton town centre.
