Reviving Gateshead’s Old Town Hall and Civic Quarter with new homes, indie food and drink spots, green space and loads of new energy.
Big changes are coming to the Civic Quarter.
We’re teaming up with Gateshead Council to breathe new life into the Civic Quarter, transforming the long-overlooked Old Town Hall and surrounding area into a vibrant new neighbourhood. Plans include new homes, green spaces and a line-up of independent cafés, bars and restaurants designed to bring more energy and activity into the heart of the town, creating a proper buzzing neighbourhood.
It's the only surviving purpose-built Victorian town hall in Tyne and Wear - a stunning piece of architecture that oozes with history and character. It served as the council's headquarters right up until 1987, when the chamber, civic suite and offices moved to the new civic centre. Since then, it's sat empty.
This is about taking one of Gateshead's most loved landmarks and respectfully making it a place that buzzes with life again - somewhere people want to live, visit and spend time. The Grade II listed Old Town Hall will be fully restored as part of the plans, bringing it back into use.
The Plans.
We’ve got big plans for the Old Town Hall, including:
• c. 250 new design-led homes for all
• Ground floor space for independent businesses including cafés, bars and restaurants that will complement Gateshead’s existing town centre offering
• New planting and green spaces including a pocket public park
• A series of vibrant and characterful green walkways linking the waterfront to the town centre, unlocking the connection between Newcastle and Gateshead
• Full restoration of the Grade II listed Old Town Hall
